Homegrown Heroes: Untold Stories of Northeast India's Sport Champions

Dear Reader,
Northeast India, its culture, and its people have long been misunderstood, questioned, and discriminated against. But things change when the same people win medals for our country. It's a fact that India's Northeast, the cradle of Olympians, has produced an endless line-up of athletic superstars.

In our special series, 'Homegrown Heroes,' The Quint brings you the stories of these extraordinary champions from the Northeast.
Once bullied for his stammer, Amlan Borgohain from Assam's Jorhat is now the fastest Indian man!

''I stammer, so that's my problem, my thing, and people used to make fun of that. So now I feel like, chalta hai abhi. Let it go. I believe that your actions speak louder than words. My actions are fast enough''.

Boxer Sarita Devi, who once transported arms for insurgents in Manipur, now trains underprivileged kids to become world-class boxers.

''The way sports saved my life, I want to guide the youth of the state in a proper way and hunt talents from far-flung areas. I failed to reach the Olympics, so my future goal is that I want to produce an Olympic medallist in the future from my academy''.

Linthoi Chanambam left her hometown in Imphal at the age of 11 to take up judo training in Karnataka's Bellari – and at 16, she is India's first Judo world champion.

''From childhood, we used to play with nature and not with toys. People of Northeast have a natural power and talent. That's why Northeast is a powerhouse of sports''.

Lovlina Borgohain changed her destiny with her Olympic win – from living in a kucha house in Assam's Galoghat to bringing fame (and a motorable road) to her village.

''People from the Northeast have seen struggle from their childhood. That's why they have always looked for that one opportunity to do something different. I always dreamt of doing something good with my life and I worked hard for it''.
